I’m Lisa Jensen, an Environmental Scientist (ES), and a member of our union’s Contract Action Team. I’m proudly voting yes on one of the strongest contracts: won through our collective efforts with our photo petition, member meetings, and historic strike. Voting started yesterday and runs through Friday, August 23.
I have been an ES with the State since 2015 and it’s important to me the salary ranges for all scientists go up significantly. The raise we will receive with our retroactive special salary adjustment effective July 1, 2024 will allow me to fully cover my mortgage. I am one of many union members who has had to supplement their income. Because we are raising both the floor and the ceiling for each range in our classifications, careers for scientists will become more sustainable.
Additionally, I travel for work and am often in expensive places which don’t have high hotel reimbursements. When I have a fabulous supervisor they happily complete excess reimbursement. Otherwise I’m in, well, less than desirable accommodations and trying to figure out a $7 breakfast. Under our new contract, our reimbursement will be tied to the Federal General Services Administration – which looks at specific cities, and means much better reimbursements for work travel. And, significant increases to both the meal and hotel per diem.
No collective bargaining agreement is perfect, and ours is no different. However, I’m voting yes to consolidate our gains and prepare for our next contract negotiation with the State from a position of strength. That struggle doesn’t just begin at the next bargaining table, but immediately upon ratification. That struggle will build upon the successes and shortcomings of our efforts. Voting yes will not only mean securing the wins we’ve all valiantly fought for on the strike line and at the bargaining table, but voting yes is the best path towards maintaining and strengthening the unity amongst Scientists which has brought us to this historic moment.
